Need for proper disposal of batteries

Waste batteries form a part of non-biodegradable waste in the environment. scrap batteries are hazardous wastes and unsafe disposal creates heavy environmental and health problems. When incinerated, heavy metals like cadmium and lead gets concentrated in the ash and has the tendency to leach slowly into the soil and groundwater. Hence the entire eco system gets disturbed. Lead acid batteries even contain small percentage of strong corrosive acids which may cause burns or danger to eyes and skin. The lead and sulphuric acid present in battery scraps results in central nervous system damage in humans and animals. Few metals evaporate into the air and cause serious air and water pollution. They affect the marine life and enter the food chain also. Finally they affect the humans who consume fish. Hence proper battery disposal is required for the survival of the planet. There are various waste battery recycling plants which not only reduce the solid wastes dumped in the landfills but also make judicious use of energy and resources.
